Insulation has an important role to play in the decarbonisation of our homes, buildings and planet. However, with so many claims out there, it can be difficult to understand what to look out for when selecting a sustainable solution.

We have broken down some of the common misconceptions around insulation to give you all the information you need when looking for a sustainable product for your project.

MYTH 1 - Products with high thermal performance are always sustainable

TRUTH - A product's thermal performance is important, but this should be balanced against its embodied carbon. Truly sustainable products offer thermal performance, alongside low-embodied carbon.

MYTH 2 - Imported Products are less Sustainable

TRUTH - Not necessarily. Transport should be considered alongside other factors like raw materials, embodied carbon, material health and circularity. An EPD is the only way to be sure of a product’s environmental impact.

MYTH 3 - Carbon emissions are the only way to measure sustainability

TRUTH - Carbon reduction is one aspect of sustainability but it’s important to consider other factors too, like circularity and the health impacts of the product.

MYTH 4 - All sustainability certifications are the same

TRUTH - There are three main types of environmental declarations but the most important certification to look for is the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Product-specific EPDs, produced to the latest EN15804 +A2 standard, provide the most accurate picture of environmental impact.

MYTH 5 - Recycled content means a low environmental impact

TRUTH - This depends on the material. Insulation products made from recycled plastic bottles have a higher environmental impact than those made from glass, because plastic originates from petrochemicals, whereas glass comes from natural resources.

MYTH 6 - Only R-values impact thermal performance.

TRUTH - Poor installation can lead to air gaps that compromise thermal performance. That’s why it’s important to choose an insulation material that’s easier to install correctly.
