Fire Resistant Gypsum Boards: Built for optimum safety

Reaction to fire vs. fire resistance: What are you specifying?

These two terms are often confused, and getting them right is central to a compliant specification.

Reaction to fire describes how a material itself responds to fire — its combustibility, smoke production and flaming droplets — and is a property of the board (classified to BS EN 13501-1, or ASTM E84 surface-burning for ASTM-specified projects)

Fire Resistance describes how long a complete assembly holds back fire — measured in minutes of integrity (E) and insulation (I), such as EI 60 or EI 120 — and is a property of the tested system, including boards, framing, fixings, insulation and jointing together. This is why a single board carries a reaction-to-fire class on its datasheet, but a fire-resistance rating always belongs to a named, tested Knauf system.
