Knauf Insulation has always been driven by sustainability. Buildings account for almost 40% of global carbon emissions and as a manufacturer, we have an important role to play in reducing their carbon footprint and environmental impact.

But true sustainability is about more than operational carbon reduction.

Yes, energy efficient insulation is essential, but today’s buildings must also reduce whole-life carbon, minimise waste, and be healthier for occupants. In a world that demands more, we provide insulation without compromise. Using state-of-the-art technology, industry leading innovation, and certified manufacturing processes, we support the industry in creating sustainable buildings that are better for people and the planet.

Our products address four key principles of sustainable construction:

1: Prioritise Energy Efficiency

Our energy efficient insulation has been designed to meet or exceed regulatory requirements for energy efficiency. The material's flexibility allows it to adapt to minor surface imperfections, minimising gaps and maximising thermal performance.


Insulation is fundamental for energy efficiency because it resists the transfer of heat through the building envelope. The right insulation makes a building more comfortable, supports energy saving, and reduces operational carbon emissions. At Knauf Insulation, we’ve developed a full suite of products that you can rely on to deliver the thermal performance you need.

We recognise that the manufacturing process creates unavoidable embodied carbon emissions. As well as aiming to reduce these as much as possible, we’re proud that it only takes 95 days from installation to offset the embodied carbon of our mineral wool insulation, through operational carbon reduction.

2: Choose Low-Carbon Materials

Made with recycled glass, trapped air and ECOSE, our unique plant-based binder, our glasswool insulation contains just one tenth of the embodied carbon of generic glasswool. This is supported by our compression-packing technology that reduces the volume of the packaged product, and the road miles required to transport it at scale. Low-carbon insulation is a more sustainable choice because it helps to reduce the embodied carbon of your building as a whole.

Factors like raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, and construction all produce embodied carbon emissions. At Knauf Insulation, we’re continuously working to reduce the environmental impact of our products and operations, to bring you products that are lower in embodied carbon. Using low-carbon insulation helps to reduce the whole-life footprint for your buildings.

3: Create healthy buildings

Our unique plant-based binder ECOSE® is low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and generates low levels of dust, for a better installer experience. Our products also hold the Eurofins Gold Certificate for Indoor Air Comfort and are free from harmful ingredients on the DECLARE 'Red List', supporting healthy buildings for occupants and the planet.

Minimise Product waste

We aim to be innovation leaders, constantly pushing the boundaries of glasswool technology. Factors like recycled glass content and recyclable packaging make our products and practices as circular as possible. Our glasswool insulation is also pre-cut to standard joist widths, to minimise offcuts and material waste on-site. The construction industry makes up around 30 - 40% of global solid waste production, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Environmentally conscious manufacturers have processes in place to minimise their contribution.

Our sustainable glasswool insulation is made with up to 80% recycled glass, obtained from local sources, which helps to re-direct more of the material from landfill. In our Asia-Pacific manufacturing facility, our state-of-the-art melter works with a wide range of recycled glass, further supporting waste reduction.
