Commission of Mkuranga II Plant - 2025

In 2015, the Mkuranga II Plant was operating at a production capacity of less than 18 million square metres per year. During this period, the plant played an important role in serving the market while laying the groundwork for future growth. As demand for plasterboard systems continued to increase across the region, it became clear that further investment would be needed to strengthen production capability, improve efficiency and support long-term business expansion.

This early phase was characterised by operational learning, market development and strategic planning. It provided the foundation for the next stage of growth by identifying the need for a more advanced and higher-capacity manufacturing setup that could support Knauf’s ambitions in the region.

A significant milestone was reached in 2020 when the plant commissioning was completed, adjusting production capacity to 18 million square metres per year. This marked an important step forward in improving the plant’s output and operational performance. The commissioning process helped align the facility with the required production standards, creating a stronger platform to serve customers more effectively and consistently.

Between 2020 and 2024, the plant continued to operate with this improved capacity while supporting growing demand in the construction sector. This phase demonstrated Knauf’s commitment to strengthening local manufacturing and building a reliable supply base for plasterboard solutions in the region. It also created the momentum for a further expansion that would transform the plant into a regional leader.

In 2025, Knauf commissioned the expansion of the Mkuranga II plasterboard plant, increasing production capacity from 18 million m² to 43 million m² and making it the largest plasterboard plant in Sub-Saharan Africa. Knauf products meet both Tanzanian (TZS 1193) and European (EN 520) standards, ensuring quality and competitive pricing for the local market. Beyond Tanzania, Knauf serves as a regional leader, exporting products to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Malawi. In addition, the Dar es Salaam-based Training Centre equips professionals with practical and theoretical knowledge of drywall construction systems, reinforcing Knauf’s commitment to capacity building and industry development.
