Building materials must also help to resist the spread of fire through the wall and provide the necessary thermal performance.

Insulation for Party Walls

In a separating party wall, insulation is required, and should be fully-filled, for thermal performance to prevent heat loss through thermal bypass, and also for acoustic performance to reduce the noise transfer between dwellings.

In this application, the mineral wool insulation is installed as the walls are built, with slabs being friction fitted between the inner and outer leaves of the wall and in between wall ties.

Thermal and acoustic performance

Thermal and acoustic performance maintain privacy and comfort, by reducing the transfer of heat and sound between neighbouring buildings.

Knauf Insulation’s party wall solutions for timber frame and masonry applications, is made from mineral wool, which is the most effective insulant for reducing sound transmission and reverberation.

And because it is flexible, mineral wool insulation can adapt to minor imperfections in the substrate, reducing air gaps and maximising thermal and acoustic performance.

Our full-fill insulation slabs can be friction fitted between the inner and outer leaves of the wall or alternatively our glass mineral blowing wool Supafil® Party Wall can be injected into masonry cavities via pre-drilled holes. 

All Knauf Insulation’s products for party walls are registered in the Robust Details Handbook, reducing the need for on-site acoustic testing.

Non-combustible products

Fire resistance is an essential function of party walls, to help prevent the spread of fire between buildings.

Knauf Insulation’s mineral wool slab, roll, and blowing wool products are non-combustible*, with a Euroclass A1 or A2-s1,d0 reaction to fire classification, offering greater peace-of-mind.

Our Knauf Fire Panel also delivers improved fire protection when used as part of a full Knauf system. Easily identifiable by the pink paper face, the gypsum boards can be finished with ready-mixed finishes, traditional plaster, or direct decoration.
