Sustainability

The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our age. At Knauf, we’re committed to supporting the construction industry to reduce carbon emissions and minimise environmental harm.

Doing more, using less.

Construction has a significant environmental impact. It’s responsible for 11% of global carbon emissions*, and in the UK, construction, demolition and excavation account for 60% of material use and waste generation**. As a manufacturer, we know we have an important role to play in supporting construction sustainability.

Not just by making products that contribute to long-lasting, healthier and more energy efficient buildings, but by actively reducing the environmental impact of our products and operations.

Globally, the Knauf Group has made robust commitments on emission reduction, harmful chemicals, waste and water use, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In the UK, we are taking action across every aspect of our operations to achieve these targets. Through careful use of raw materials, optimising our manufacturing techniques, more efficient distribution, and end-of-life recycling.

Everything we do is underpinned by our drive to become a more responsible business, so you can rely on us as a partner for building solutions.

Our EPDs are externally validated, and both Knauf Insulation and Knauf Gypsum are accredited ‘Gold’ by the Supply Chain Sustainability School.

Our products can be used to earn points under multiple criteria in green building rating schemes, including those related to energy efficiency, embodied carbon and responsible sourcing.

We have produced help sheets to show which credits our products can contribute towards. You can download these from our Download Centre.

Most of our products are recyclable, please check individual product data sheets for more information. For our plasterboard, we operate a Take Back scheme to recycle waste from sites.

Knauf understands the importance of circularity in creating a more sustainable construction industry and is working in key markets to identify opportunities to develop additional take back schemes.
