Knauf Gypsum's Sustainability Commitment

Knauf plasterboard is made from gypsum, a durable, long lasting and infinitely recyclable mineral. The gypsum core is sandwiched between recycled paper liners which are removed to recycle again; plasterboard is a building material ideally suited to the circular economy.

We work with our customers to reduce their on-site waste, through our bespoke board sizes and plasterboard waste toolbox talks. We also have a take back scheme partnership, to help responsibly recycle offcuts and unused boards, tracking carbon and waste data while helping to meet sustainability targets. Our factories in Sittingbourne and Immingham are continuing to investigate and invest in ways to reduce our impact on the environment, through water reduction in production, more efficient use of raw materials, and heat recovery systems to minimise energy wastage. Our management systems are certified to ISO 14001 at both of our sites, and we hold accreditation for responsible sourcing with BES 6001 Excellent rating for our plasterboard production.

Since 2021, we have had our Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions, and our social value data externally validated by Planet Mark, who help us to measure and monitor our progress. We have also started including some of our Scope 3 emissions for verification.

Our highlights for our 2024 report include a Scope 1 & 2 carbon reduction (market based) of -7.2% vs 2023 and a total social value of over £2.6million.
