Connecting Spaces: Bespoke Linear Ceilings at Paddington

The Paddington Integrated Project (PIP) at London Paddington station aimed to create a better passenger experience through improved integration of the Elizabeth Line (formerly Crossrail), London Underground, Network Rail, and Transport for London (TfL).

A key challenge was finding bespoke interior ceiling solutions suitable for both internal and demanding external environments. These solutions needed to be Section 12 compliant, fully accessible for services, and meet stringent health and safety standards for a busy station at the heart of London. 

Knauf Ceiling Solutions provided the solutions, installing approximately 300m² of their METAL B-H 300 linear perforated metal plank system with an acoustic fleece on the low-level concourse. On the high-level concourse, bespoke perforated linear METAL Baffle Elements, accommodating anti-vermin and bird mesh, were installed. These baffles were left unperforated in the taxi deck due to its semi-exposed location. The grid was also powder-coated for corrosion resistance, and the number of hangers was increased for the more extreme environment. 

The same linear aesthetic was used on platforms 15 and 16, but with lighter aluminium extrusion baffles angled at 45˚ to deflect noise over the tracks. These 500m² linear baffle modules used a bespoke suspension system with locked access panels.
